Natural dyes are derived mainly from plants or minerals, majority being vegetable dyes from plant sources. Throughout history people have dyed their textiles using locally available materials that produce brilliant and permanent colours. Dyeing practices from India have exercised the greatest influences even on European dyers since as early as the16th century. Dyeing using different kinds of grasses, herbs, trees, bushes (some poisonous but yet produced dyes), was an established technique through the Indus Valley civilization as early as 2500 BC.

The blue pigment Indigo, used in abundance today, was found by ancient dyers through a variety of sources. One such source is the Natural dyes of Aranya in the picturesque Munnar region of Kerala. Here they gather the discards of leaves, seeds, flowers & nuts, available bountifully in nature, to produce natural dyes. This collection from the abundance of nature is utilized to make a range of natural dyed fabrics alluring to the senses and fascinating to the sight. This in turn helps provide livelihood to many, especially the differently-abled youth of this state. The proof of success of Aranya is a group of physically challenged young adults from the families of tea plantation workers. Aranya produces a range of textiles dyed in diverse colours. Patterning techniques include pole wrap, Shibori, wax resist block printing and stitch resist dyeing. Tea waste is one of the plentiful sources of natural dye material. Aranya products include exquisite shawls and scarves made from silk and cotton masterfully handcrafted and dyed in alluring shades and colours.
