Note: A speciality of Kutch in Gujarat are the beautiful shawls woven in wool, tie dyed and embroidered with mirror inserts similar to the motifs which run the length of the textile. The woollen weaves of the plains are mostly associated with seminomadic people who move with their cattle, sheep and camels. In Saurashtra and Kutch, women wear woollen odhnis (whose ends are often ornamented with woven bands of gold or are tiedyed or have embroidered patterns),The men carry a woollen dhabla - a white shawl on their shoulders. These shawls were traditionally made of rough wool from sheep. The main colours used in the tie dye of this region are yellow, green, red and black. Traditional designs are of a distinctive style with bands of simple geometric shapes such as stripes, diamonds, triangles, stars and motifs like scorpions and peacocks. More recently weavers have started experimenting with combinations of cotton and silk. The shawls are yarned on traditional looms. The numbers of threads are dependent on the design and are tied with pedals. The craftsperson carries out the weaving using the up and down technique in which the weaver pushes the pedal up once and then down.
